PRESS RELEASE
Today in San Michele, a sold-out event focused on “PIWI” grape varieties took place. Organized by CIVIT – Consorzio Innovazione Vite and the Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM), the meeting included a visit to the experimental vineyards and a guided tasting of selected wines produced in FEM’s microvinification cellar.
Speakers included Enrico Giovannini, President of CIVIT, and Francesco Spagnolli, President of FEM. The strategic role of the Foundation in researching grape varieties resistant to fungal diseases was highlighted, thanks to its genetic improvement program.
Research and experimentation on resistant varieties have led to the registration of four new selections in the National Registry in recent years, thanks to the valuable collaboration with CIVIT: Termantis, Nermantis, Charvir, and Valnosia. “Since its inception, this organization has always paid special attention to viticulture, oenology, and grape genetics,” explained Prof. Spagnolli. “We are now aiming to develop resistant varieties suitable also for sparkling wine production.”
